Peak’s Olympic Challenge Report

PEAK FITNESS’S VERY OWN OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS…

Olympic Challenge 2008 Report

8 August – 24 August 2008

Peak Fitness & Health organised a 16 day fun Olympic Challenge for all of our members to partake in. The idea was to create a “team campus” within our gym where we could compete against each other and share in the delight of our New Zealand team competing in the Beijing Olympics 2008. What happened was so much more!!

We created 3 different types of challenges so there was something for everyone.

Challenge 1 was “Cardio” orientated and was a mixture of Rowing, Cycling and Running.

There were 8 events available; different distances and similar distances to that of Mahe Drysdale, The Evers-Swindell twins, & Emma Twigg who competed at Beijing.

Challenge 2 was “Power & Strength” orientated and this bought out the Valerie Villi’s, Precious McKenzie’s and Nigel Avery’s in us. There were 9 possible events to enter, including a Leg Press, Bench Press, Hover, Tricep Dips, Wall Squat and Chin Ups.

Challenge 3 was a Decathlon within our Group Fitness room where 10 events where compulsory over the 16 days – 1 class of each on our current timetable had to be done.

Friday 8th August arrived and we kicked off the Challenges with the official opening. Jess carried in the torch and lighted the Flame to the sound of the “Olympia” music and got us in the mood for a fun competition. We swore under oath to do our best, have fun and to kick ass!! Graeme & Brenda presented BodyVive to our members and before long, all of us were singing songs from yesteryear and laughing together, cos we were having so much fun!!.

More and more members put their names up for Challenges 1 & 2 as days went by and members recorded their “personal bests”. Some results were amazing!. One particular female recorded 260kg on the leg Press, one male topped 270kg in the Bench Press, several of our young men did well in the tricep dips and chin ups, our group fitness ladies set the pace in the Hover, Side plank and Wall Squat. I think, even our members were surprised just how well they did and were hooked to improve their own “Personal Bests”. This also set the competition between each other. If one person did well, then there was always someone who wanted to try and beat that time – examples were the 2000m rowing, the 5km cycle, the hover, the bench press, the leg press and even the shoulder press!!

The Decathlon proved the same – 2 of our members finished the 9 events possible in the first week and were off to a flying start. They experienced new classes and added variety to their workouts. Many a time I heard them say, that they enjoyed doing something different and are now able to tell other members within the GF room about a particular class. Approximately 12 people entered the Decathlon and 8 successfully completed the challenge. Determination and dedication was the key for 2 of our members as they finished work (nightshift) at 7.00am and came to the Marathon class at 9.30am and stayed for the Closing Ceremony at 11.00am! I most certainly hope they managed to get some sleep for the rest of the day as they definitely earnt it!!

We have some great support from local businesses and gave out 20+ prizes to worthy recipients.

Some of the fantastic prizes were: Free 1 month membership, free personal training session From Premium Fitness, free RPM sessions, free suntaning sessions, a Massage voucher from Mark Foote, coffee vouchers from Jacksons Bakery, products from Health 2000, Peak Fitness Drink bottles, soaps & smellies, candles, choccies, vouchers from Cucini and Olive tree Cafe etc etc.
