About the Millers:

Hi all. First off I have to say that this is really exciting and bloody petrifying at the same time. It is definitely not ideal that you all get to see how fat we are!!! But if it works for the ‘Biggest Loser’ then maybe it can work for us!

Matt and I own a website development company called Mogul and we spend probably 10-12 hours a day working at our computers – to say that we have a sedentary job is a bit of an understatement!

We both enjoy running and have been aiming to run about 5k every second day, in reality that hasn’t been happening. We have been wanting to run a half marathon for a while but never quite get around to it so when Charissa suggested we do the 12 Week Challenge – we jumped at the chance.

It’s not just about the half marathon though, we know we need to do something about our overall health and fitness if we want to enjoy a long and happy life and we are ready to make this lifestyle change.

So we will keep you up to date with how we go – it ain’t going to be pretty but it’s going to be bloody amazing!

Cheers, George and Matt Miller

Day 1 – Assessment Day:

OMG! Gutted! I am nearly half fat – what the? I didn’t even think that was possible. We had our assessments today and they were frightening – as you all can see! There were moments during the assessments where we were like #@&^ but definitely feeling motivated and keen to get started. And the website is live now, so no backing out! Will write more next week.

End of Week 1:

Whoa! What a week! We have managed to fit in a Pump and Combat class – both were wicked – 3 runs (one of which was for an hour), an induction day at the gym to learn how to use the equipment and Flow Yoga, which was also very good. It’s been awesome, the highs were the classes and the lows were the muscle pain we endured because of the classes! But the funniest thing was the look of complete and utter pain on Matt’s bright red face when he was doing pulses in the Combat class – it was a classic Mastercard ‘priceless’ moment.

End of Week 2:

We had a really tough time trying to fit everything in, with running our own business and two children under 5, but we had a really great week, went to Pump, RPM, Balance and for 3 runs (one was for 60 minutes with a friend who has done a few half marathons and she went soooo fast I thought I was going to be sick). We also had a complimentary PT session with Chad which was hard-out but awesome so we have decided to pay for one session a week going forward. But then.. uh-oh, we blew out. It was our 7th wedding anniversary on Saturday night and we had the best intentions of drinking only a little but our last guests left at about 4.30am – yep, it was a big night. But that’s our only social engagement in this 12 week period so it’s noses to the grind-stone for the next 10 weeks.

End of Week 3:

It’s only been 3 weeks but I am fitting clothes that I haven’t been able to fit for nearly a year and Matt’s beer belly seems to be shrinking – hooray! I am enjoying the gym way more than running at the moment and I am a little obsessed with Pump classes – if you haven’t tried one, you should – they’re GREAT! I strained my hamstring on Friday so have had the weekend off which has been very disappointing but I am told to make sure it gets better to avoid a prolonged injury. Overall we are feeling so good about the whole challenge, the initial muscle soreness has gone and Matt can’t believe how much fitter he feels after such a short time.

End of Week 4:

Got the ok to train again after a week of physio for that dratted hamstring. So frustrating and feel like I am a week behind now but I did try to keep myself busy with a bit of swimming, uphill walking on the treadmill (great fat-burning) and Yoga, which is my new obsession! Flow Yoga is wonderful, if you haven’t tried it, you should. And if I look as good as Graeme when I am his age I will be extremely happy! My run yesterday felt great so I ran down to Flow and back today. Matt had a hell session with Chad on Weds and has been cursing him ever since – Chad’s advice was to harden up. Good advice that.

End of Week 5:

It’s all going a bit pear-shaped… Matt’s been suffering from man-flu for NINE days and hasn’t done any training at all which is pretty useless. And every time I do some training, I get a #$@%ing injury!!! I can’t even run 10k at the moment let alone train for the half marathon!!! Not good, not happy.

End of Week 6:

It’s the half-way mark! We had assessments on Friday and we were really happy with the results. We have both dropped fat and gained lean muscle mass, our oxygen uptakes have both improved, centimeters of girth have disappeared etc etc So we’re feeling pretty good about things.

End of Week 7:

I had just got over (most of) my injuries when I picked up a snotty cold and was out of action for about 4 days and then lo and behold – another injury and back to physio. Matt has a chronic achilles problem that he is getting treated for too. Nothing much more to say than that. I am sick of talking about injuries.

End of Week 8:

Last week was an exercise in enduring Chad-pain (also known as "extreme muscular pain") – that is the pain you feel a couple of days after a PT session with Chad. A combination of weights and boxing gets you every time! And if I were to give advice about RPM Enduro – DO NOT EAT before you go!

End of Week 9:

Two weeks without injuries – yay! Had a great boxing session on Weds where I nearly sconed Chad (I will get you next time) and Matt is getting really strong which he is quite chuffed about. The kids were with mum for the week, so we even got to go to RPM Enduro and Flow Yoga together on Thursday – how romantic!

End of Week 10:

I jinxed myself!! Back at physio this week, groan. Matt is charging though, he is lifting quite heavy weights at Pump and with Chad and even managed 100 sit-ups which is a massive improvement from the 20-odd that he could do when we first started. AND it’s the Taupo Half next weekend – not an option of either of us which is pretty disappointing but we have had so many positives come out of this training that we’re not going to dwell on it.

End of Week 11:

Oh my God! I had the ‘actual’ flu this week and I was completely crippled by it. I spent 3 days in bed!!! Then the kids got it and Matt had to hold the fort. So not much fitness happened this week – I had enough trouble hanging out the washing let alone going to the gym!! Only one more week to go…. It’s gone so quickly!

End of 12 Weeks!:

Wow! That has gone sooooooooo fast. We have LOVED doing the 12 week challenge, it has been truly amazing to see how far we have come in such a short time. I have been caned by injury and sickness but still managed to lose a fair bit of weight and my overall fitness has drastically improved. Matt thinks he is Arnie in the making bc he is able to do quite heavy weights and is just stoked overall with the results.

Th team at Peak Fitness have been amazing, Chad in particular has been a legend. We really appreciate the fact we got the opportunity to do the challenge so if Charissa and Andy ask if you want to do the 12 Week Challenge – JUMP AT THE CHANCE!!!!
