VLK Duathlon Report

Sunday 25th May 2008 – who would have thought that on waking the clouds are grey and the rain is constant.  That did not stop those keen Peak Multi Sport Club members to turn out, thermals and rain coats layered and wondering "What am I doing here".   It was a great turn out for the Hawkes Bay Multi Sport Club considering the conditions.

The keen team of Susan, Todd, Andy Barham,  Andy Curran, Andy Horne, Karen, Charissa, Mike Leary, Mike Ward – were legends in just conquering the conditions.  The technique and transistion classes on a Tuesday evening run by Jeanette Cooper have paid off – Susan making those transitions look easy.

From here – the swimming and running training will continue and then a couple of weeks out from the next VLK – Very Low Key – Duathlon we will launch some more transition trainings.  There are events for you all – if you have not come to any yet and were put of by the rain – do not worry – any time is a great time to start – catch Mark at one of the swimming sessions or for cycling tap into the RPM classes if you do not want to venture outside.  The idea of our multi sport club is to give us all a non-threatening way to train for and get involved in different Multi Sport events – any Peak member is welcome.  What a great way to stay motivated as the days get shorter and the weather colder.  We all agreed that today we all would have sat by the fire – but by meeting a few people at the event we all achieved something – and that was getting there.

Training Update – Peak Multi Sport Club

Well done to all the keen members heading to Jeanette’s transition and technique trainings on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Our first VLK (Very Low Key) Duathlon is this Sunday outside Peak Fitness.  Registration is at 9am – Kick Off at 10am.  If you are thinking about it – here is some extra incentive – we will pay for your entry if you are a Peak Fitness Member!!  See Andy or Charissa at the registration and we will organise that for you.  We will be there doing the race too – Andy is training for the Coast to Coast in 2009 and well Charissa is support crew – encouraging from the behind and keeping the kids under control!!

Tuesday 6.30pm Cycling/Running Transition Trainings – These will pause for the next few weeks and re launch 2 weeks prior to the next VLK – Watch this space for details.  The crew who have been going along regularly are getting very sharp at their transitions – they should fly through this Sunday.

Swimming – Unfortunately John Beaumont’s is closed on the Wednesday evening when we had planned a training session – here is an update of the times:

11.30 am Tuesday; 6.30 pm Tuesday, 6.30 pm Thursday and 11.30 am Friday – all at John Beaumont’s pool in Havelock North.  Mark Foote will be at all the sessions to coach people through – it does not matter what level you are at – Mark is there to help.

Good luck for this weekend and see you all Sunday.

Charissa

Tremains Triathlon 2008

TREMAINS REPORT 2008

Wow – what a great year for the Tremains Triathlon – the weather was perfect and there were thousands of people participating of a wide variety of levels and ages. We had a great turnout this year with 9 teams – 2 mens teams and the rest were mixed.

The swimmers gave us all a great start – Martha Flynn and Daneisha Renata coming out of the water first and Graeme and Kathryn not so far behind. Off Mark Foote went on the cycle with $5 riding on that Andy would not catch him – lets just say that Mark is short of $5 and Charissa spent it on a good coffee!!

The cycle gave the event a bit of atmosphere especially when Lika decided to take a car on – head on!!!! I am not sure how the car is but the bike – well Lika may need to go shopping for a new one…..Off went the runners- by then the day was starting to heat up – with Chiper over the line to lead all the Peak teams to the finish and to the bbq and easter eggs.

A big thank you for all the participants who gave it a a go – and I get the impression they will be back next year for some more – lets go for 18 teams in 2009!!!

We had our own prizegiving – and the winners were:

Sarah Reo – t shirt
Jason Fox – free individual tremains entry 2009
Mike Leary – free team entry tremains 2009
Di Abraham – 1 month membership
Jason Skipper – RPM Concession
See you all in 2009!!!!

Peak Multi Sport Club

The Peak Multi Sport Club has been launched with the help of Jeanette Cooper from the Hawke’s Bay Multi Sport Club.

The winter training schedule has been set – sessions are free and exclusive to all Peak Fitness Members. There is a cost for the entry for the swimming.

Most Club Training begins (except for swimming begins 11th May due to pool closure) on Monday May 5th – the first week back of the school term.

Swimming:
Tuesday 11.30 am
Wednesday 6.15 pm
Friday 12.00 pm
Sunday 9am (all at John Beaumonts), and;
Saturday afternoons at Ocean Spa (time to be confirmed).

Mark Foote will be there at those times to work with who ever turns up re: technique and training for any level swimmer. Mark’s contact details: 0276556816.

Cycling (begins Tuesday 6th May):
For winter we go indoors (and from there people may buddy up for a weekend ride).

We will have our own ‘club’ time slot Tuesday 6.30 pm in the RPM room – we can look at cross training in this time slot i.e. practicing transitions, some core and flexibility work and also have some fun

Running (beginning Saturday May 10th at 7am):
Much safer as Jeanette said to run in winter in the dark with a group. Jeanette has lots of ideas to keep us going with the running!!!

Jeanette’s Super Tips:
Swimming in summer time on a Wednesday night there is a swimming class that offers advice on open water swimming, wetsuits etc. The first 2 ladies triathlons the swim is based in the pool, for the men it is straight to open water.

Calender of events:
Monday May 5th – Week one of our club training – yipee…
Wednesday May 7th – 6.30 pm Orientation evening presented by the HBMSC Jeanette Cooper – tips and advice – how we get started in multi sport (Charissa said she would bring the baking – now it is in writing she will not forget or eat it before it gets there…. )
Sunday May 25th – VLK (Very Low Key) Series 1 – Havelock North (let Charissa know if you are keen via email – this first one Peak will pay your entry fee…)
Sunday 15th June – VLK Series 2
Sunday 29th June – 3 Rivers Festival of Duathlons
Sunday 13th July – Peak Multi Sport Club Indoor Triathlon and social event…
Sunday 17th August – VLK Series 3
Sunday 12th October – Harveys Corporate Duathlon

Charissa has copies of all the information for these events at the gym – I will leave them at reception – otherwise check out the multi sport club website www.hbmsc.org.nz

Once again many thanks for taking the steps to be part of something new – who knows where we will go but we will definitely have some fun on the way….

Keep in touch
Charissa Barham
