By getting out of the studio and into nature, you can experience yoga as it was originally intended. "Being outdoors gives you access to a whole other world of sensations. It helps you feel part of a boundless existence, at one with an intelligent and sympathetic universe.  The pure unpredictability of being outside and exposed to the elements can strengthen an existing practice or inspire a new one.

The Les Mills Multi Module Weekend April 3-5 2009

This was organised and held at Peak Fitness, Havelock North for 23 trainees throughout Hawkes Bay. Peak Fitness registered  8 trainees, Contours Napier 8, Bay City Gym in Napier 3, Aspyre Gym in Hastings 3 and 1 trainee came up from City Fitness in Palmerston North.

LM-International-Trainers

Our three fabulous International trainers were Sarah Robinson, Bevan James Eyles and Sarah Ostergard and this was the first time Les Mills had ever run a Multi Module weekend for the whole 8 programmes that Les Mills has to offer. Some trainees decided to get value for money and registered  in 2 programmes over the weekend.

The programmes involved:
RPM – 8 trainees
BodyPump – 9 Trainees
BodyStep – 3 trainees
BodyCombat – 4 Trainees
Body Attack – 2 trainees
BodyVive – 4 trainees
BodyJam – 4 trainees
BodyBalance – 5 trainees

The weekend started with a Multi 1.5 hour Group Fitness class opened to members and trainees and the room was packed out. We had so much fun trying to Jam it like Sarah R, squat like Sarah O and kick as high as Bevan J in BodyAttack!

There was theory as well as physical exercises and we always began with a funny icebreaker game at the start of every session. The 5 Key Elements of Les Mills are: Choreography, Role Model Technique, Coaching Mastery, Connecting and Creating Fitness Magic. All trainees went through these compulsory topics and had to be competent in all of them by the end of the three day weekend. While the majority of the training was done in one large group, there was plenty of downtime where trainees could prepare for their presentations – one on Saturday and the final on Sunday. We were scrutinised from head to toe and received lots of positive feedback along the way.

Instructors-and-MembersNo Les Mills module is complete until you do the “Fitness Challenge”. This welcomes you into the The Les Mills family and is designed to push yourself to the limit to see if you have got what it takes! We had the “100 Club” test – 100 benchpresses, 100 plyometric lunges, 100 bicep curls, 100 O.T.T double squats and 50 sprint lengths with 10 jabs at each end of the room after we warmed up, which was a run around Anderson Park!!  Believe it or not, I thought this was actually fun, in a crazy sort of way and paired up with a trainee from another gym. We made so much noise and commotion that members and passerbys stopped to look in to see what we were up to. The first pair home to complete the Fitness Challenge were Jess Hanara and Lisa Ju from Peak Fitness who worked together as a team beautifully and had great strategies. Well done to you both.

The Weekend finally came to an end and there were many exhausted bodies and fatiqued minds at the end of it. Our final presentation was marked and we awaited confirmation of a “Pass” or “Re-sit”. All Eight trainees at Peak Fitness and Health passed the module and now have 12 weeks to video a Group Fitness class that they teach. This is forwarded onto Les Mills in Auckland where it is analysed by the Assessors.  A Certificate is awarded to the successful trainees. This enables them to teach a Group Fitness class without supervision from other Qualified Staff.
Peak Fitness are very proud of their staff that attended the module and feel 100% confident the gym will continue to deliver to the highest standard in Hawkes Bay.
Well done to Ngaio Lewis, Anna Brooks, Anna Kay, Stephanie Nicolson, Lisa Ju, Sue Taaffe, Jess Hanara and Brenda Gowan.

Theme – Friday 13th

The scene was set to scare our members and when they entered the GF room at 5.30pm on Friday the 13th March, it was with a little apprehension and uncertainty!!

The room was pitch dark, filled with smoke and smelled musty, laser lights showed glimpes of  scary monsters up by the stage and the wicked laughter of a vampire greeted us all!!

Our instructors hid in the room as our members came in and tapped people on the shoulder, rattled the punching bag chains, jumped out at them and sent many a child (and adults) heart-rate through the roof!

Graeme was dressed in a skeleton suit, Jess was the Grim Reaper, Stephanie was a Zombie, while Anna, Sarah & Ngaio were the Red Devils. Lisa and Brenda made great witches and Sue’s spider outfit was awesome! Dwayne looked like he had just come back from the grave – his face makeup was so real like!! – A big thank you to Jo Corke (our make-up artist) for making us look so ugly and scary!! – you did a fabulous job!

The order of our 1.5 hour Multi class was as follows.-
Balance 3 tracks, Combat 3 tracks, BodyVive 2 Tracks, Step 2 tracks, Pump 3 tracks and Jam 2 tracks. At the same time, RPM was in full swing upstairs for 45 mins.
We had our trainees up on stage with us this launch who did wonderfully well and didn’t show any signs of nerves. The outfits proved hard to stay on though – witch outfits are not designed for physical activity and Skeletons don’t like to wear microphones!!

We had a good turnout.  Sadly, the night had to come to an end and we had to take off the make-up and return to our normal selves. Gosh, it was so much fun to dress up and become someone else for the night!!.

A big thank you to our members for attending our launch, Jo Corke, our fantastic team of  instructors and trainees and to Jess for organising all the theme props.  It was a fun and very successful night.

Lets enjoy the new releases over the next month – Step 75, Pump 69, RPM 42, BodyVive 10 and so on!

Relay for Life Weekend – March 07/08

Once again (5th year in a row!), Peak Fitness & Health entered a team into the fun Community Event and helped to raise much needed funds for the HB Cancer Society.
We kept our theme name “Peak Fighters” but had a reasonably new team this year who brought enthusiasm and excitement to the event.

As always, it is held at the Tareha Reserve in Guppy Road, Taradale and runs for 24 hours – Sat lunchtime to Sunday lunchtime. We kept the same tent site and this proved to be a god send after the massive downpour of rain late Saturday afternoon. The track turned into a muddy mess!. Our side of the track was a lot better than the other side!!

Our team of 21 walked and ran around the track and clocked over 350 laps. We finished 4th out of 63 teams, behind Taradale High School, Kupa International Martial Arts and Plus Rehab. Our team raised $2,500 plus. The HB Cancer Society’s total as at lunchtime 8 March was $230,000 with the total still rising! This was an awesome effort.!!

The theme laps this year was “Mamma Mia”, “Thriller” and “Once upon a Time”. Peak Fighters had representatives on the track for all 3 themes and they looked great! Anna, Jo, Jade and Kendal did us proud as Abba girls! There was a dance off competition for “Mamma Mia” and although we never entered our team, we had a lot of laughs looking at the outfits and choreography of the other teams. Lisa dressed to scare at midnight when the “Thriller” lap arrived.

Graeme, our Yoga and Balance Guru arrived in the wee hours of the morning to take a stretch class for everybody at the event. This was just what we needed to relieve many aches and pains. The CHB Clowns sure did look funny trying to copy Graeme.

Breakfast and the smell of Bacon & Eggs was a welcome delight and this kept us going until the final lap at midday. Paula & Kendal entertained us by doing handstands and cartwheels up and down the track in the final stages of Sunday morning.

Everyone boxed in to pull down the tents, put the cargo net and Peak Fitness banner away for another year and sadly, but sleepily returned to their cars and drove home for a well deserved Sunday afternoon sleep. A big thanks to Jess & Dimi and their family for providing the tent this year – it was perfect!!

Well Done Peak Fighters – you rocked!!
Members of our amazing team this year are:
Carla Cameron, Paula Coppell, Jan Gordon, Christine Sheppard, Charlotte Oliver, Cherie Allen, Jenni Jones, Jo Corke, Anna Kay, Anna, Jade and Amber Brooks, Lisa Ju and daughter Jess, Brenda, Kendal & James Gowan, Jess, Dimi, Ben, Georgia and Rhiarne Hanara.

We are all ready for next year!!

Rowing Marathon – 42195 metres

Date:  Saturday 28th November 8.30 am kick off

Name Time Average over 500m Strokes per minute
Doug Abraham 2hr57min47sec 2.06 21
Chris Evans 2hr59min34sec 2.07 26
Andrew 2hr59min09sec 2.01 25
Chris Owen 2hr48min46sec 1.59 20

Over a quiet social drink one evening Chris Owen set the ball rolling – what eventuated from one person ended up 4 strapping lads taking on an INDOOR ROWING MARATHON -  The training began and the date was set.

Kick off at 8.30 am – the team set up – little tables for their energy replacement drinks, camel backs and lots of towels to mop up the sweat not to mention their support from their family and friends.

They all had a goal of under 3 hours which they all achieved – I must admit I have never seen as much sweat in the gym as what I saw that morning.

Coming of the rower was a bit of a challenge – tight hamstrings and well those rear ends definitely got worked over – but wow what an achievement – they can all now say that they have done a marathon – on a rower – I am starting to sense after their post marathon celebrations their maybe another shot at it next year – watch this space…

Congratulations to Chris for getting them started and to all the men for their amazing row – and many thanks to Diva’s for been the place to get them talking and started….

Check out the boys here…
