VLK Duathlon Report
Sunday 25th May 2008 – who would have thought that on waking the clouds are grey and the rain is constant
. That did not stop those keen Peak Multi Sport Club members to turn out, thermals and rain coats layered and wondering "What am I doing here". It was a great turn out for the Hawkes Bay Multi Sport Club considering the conditions.
The keen team of Susan, Todd, Andy Barham, Andy Curran, Andy Horne, Karen, Charissa, Mike Leary, Mike Ward – were legends in just conquering the conditions. The technique and transistion classes on a Tuesday evening run by Jeanette Cooper have paid off – Susan making those transitions look easy.
From here – the swimming and running training will continue and then a couple of weeks out from the next VLK – Very Low Key – Duathlon we will launch some more transition trainings. There are events for you all – if you have not come to any yet and were put of by the rain – do not worry – any time is a great time to start – catch Mark at one of the swimming sessions or for cycling tap into the RPM classes if you do not want to venture outside. The idea of our multi sport club is to give us all a non-threatening way to train for and get involved in different Multi Sport events – any Peak member is welcome. What a great way to stay motivated as the days get shorter and the weather colder. We all agreed that today we all would have sat by the fire – but by meeting a few people at the event we all achieved something – and that was getting there.

Training Update – Peak Multi Sport Club
Well done to all the keen members heading to Jeanette’s transition and technique trainings on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings.
Our first VLK (Very Low Key) Duathlon is this Sunday outside Peak Fitness. Registration is at 9am – Kick Off at 10am. If you are thinking about it – here is some extra incentive – we will pay for your entry if you are a Peak Fitness Member!! See Andy or Charissa at the registration and we will organise that for you. We will be there doing the race too – Andy is training for the Coast to Coast in 2009 and well Charissa is support crew – encouraging from the behind and keeping the kids under control!!
Tuesday 6.30pm Cycling/Running Transition Trainings – These will pause for the next few weeks and re launch 2 weeks prior to the next VLK – Watch this space for details. The crew who have been going along regularly are getting very sharp at their transitions – they should fly through this Sunday.
Swimming – Unfortunately John Beaumont’s is closed on the Wednesday evening when we had planned a training session – here is an update of the times:
11.30 am Tuesday; 6.30 pm Tuesday, 6.30 pm Thursday and 11.30 am Friday – all at John Beaumont’s pool in Havelock North. Mark Foote will be at all the sessions to coach people through – it does not matter what level you are at – Mark is there to help.
Good luck for this weekend and see you all Sunday.

St Patricks Day 2008
Wow – what a St Patrick’s Day this year. Members entered the gym following the frog feet all the way into the Group Fitness Room with the St Pat’s message of 2008 from Jess and Brenda. Every class had little ‘leap’ challenges in the class and it was great to see the 50 plus ladies all decked out in green – from the hats and t shirts to green hair everywhere!! The spirit carried on into the evening with not a speck of any other colour but green anywhere. There were even members (I will refrain from names…..???) who were so committed they came to the 6am Pump Class and then made a quiet departure to the Famous Yearly Rose and Shamrock Irish St Pats Day Breakfast. Thanks to all those who made the effort to "Go Green" for the day – what will next year bring???
Relay for Life 2008 – Peak Fighters
Relay for Life – 23/24 Feb 2008
Tareha Reserve, Guppy Road, Taradale
Team Number and Tent Site – “68″
This is the fourth year Peak Fitness & Health have entered a team in the Relay for Life Event, which raises money for the HB Cancer Society. Our Team “Peak Fighters” raised the most amount of money this year due to the fact our team members doubled from last year.
Our Grand Total raised was $3550.00!!!
Members of our Amazing Team were:

Adrienne & Blair Heney
Olga McClunie
To help raise the money, we organised 5 major fundraisers in Feb 08, which were a Sausage Sizzle, a Nutrition & Fat Loss Course, Hamper Grocery Raffle, Mystery class and a Prenzels evening.
We had 24 hours of fun and dressed up and joined in the fun themes of “Mask Masquerade”, “Things that go bump in the night” and “Art Deco Dash”. We joined in the Line Dancing, cooked on the Bar-be-que and made it a real family affair with the children of our team coming along over the 24 hours. Most of our team stayed the night and not a lot of sleep was had, but instead lots of fun times, great stories to tell and blisters on feet and aching muscles the next day.
We accumulated a total of 480+ laps over the 24 hours and finished 2nd out of 100 teams. Not a bad effort by any means and on par with previous years.
In 2005, we placed 2nd
In 2006, we placed 1st – 500 laps plus!!
In 2007, we placed 4th
Anyone interested in joining our 2009 team should keep an eye out for a meeting in November 2008 and our goal is to have 2 teams next year – a running team and a walking team and our target? well – $4000.00 should be achievable!!
How to Reach Your Peak
Here are some of Peak Fitness’s Inspirational Tips:
BECOME A SCHEDULE MASTER
How are your planning skills? We all have busy lifestyles and “I do not have enough time” is often the first excuse; (remember that exercise is a great way to keep those energy levels high so we can lead a fulfilling lifestyle) – the best way to get the most out of each weeks work outs is to plan them in by:
- Writing them in your diary – working around all the work, family, extra curricular events in your week.
- Plan your month’s exercise – print it out – put on the fridge, the back of the toilet door and at work so that your family and colleagues know when you will be busy.
- Do you have one of those phones with schedule alarms in them – set your training in your phone – it will soon tell you where you need to be!
REACH YOUR GROUP FITNESS PEAK
Here is a Group Fitness Tip:
Body Balance
For the Balance Track – if you feel you are wobbling around (and you are sure it is not the wind in the room); find one still spot for your eye gaze to settle on, engage the abdominals by pulling navel to spine and keeping the tail bone tucked and then touch down when you need to find that still spot and re set. Depending on what has happened in your day – both physically and mentally can determine where you are with the Balance track at that moment. It is a time to come into the moment, still the body and still the mind.
Tremains Triathlon 2008
TREMAINS REPORT 2008
Wow – what a great year for the Tremains Triathlon – the weather was perfect and there were thousands of people participating of a wide variety of levels and ages. We had a great turnout this year with 9 teams – 2 mens teams and the rest were mixed.
The swimmers gave us all a great start – Martha Flynn and Daneisha Renata coming out of the water first and Graeme and Kathryn not so far behind. Off Mark Foote went on the cycle with $5 riding on that Andy would not catch him – lets just say that Mark is short of $5 and Charissa spent it on a good coffee!!
The cycle gave the event a bit of atmosphere especially when Lika decided to take a car on – head on!!!! I am not sure how the car is but the bike – well Lika may need to go shopping for a new one…..Off went the runners- by then the day was starting to heat up – with Chiper over the line to lead all the Peak teams to the finish and to the bbq and easter eggs.
A big thank you for all the participants who gave it a a go – and I get the impression they will be back next year for some more – lets go for 18 teams in 2009!!!
We had our own prizegiving – and the winners were:
Sarah Reo – t shirt
Jason Fox – free individual tremains entry 2009
Mike Leary – free team entry tremains 2009
Di Abraham – 1 month membership
Jason Skipper – RPM Concession
See you all in 2009!!!!
